Vice President, Minerals and Metals, GTA, Ausenco
Biography
As Vice President of Minerals and Metals, GTA at Ausenco – a global company delivering value-add consulting studies, project delivery, asset operations and maintenance solutions – Yan Jin leads through collaboration. And that has allowed her to play a key role in shaping client outcomes, environmental sustainability and diversity, both within her firm and the mining sector.
Before taking over the leadership of the GTA office at Ausenco, Jin spent nearly 20 years delivering value-driven outcomes to her clients. “Client-centricity is my passion,” she says. To provide true value to our clients, we must first understand their needs and challenges. Putting the client at the heart of every decision is the foundation of our approach to every project at Ausenco. This focus allows us to deliver tailored solutions and build lasting relationships.”
This understanding of the challenges facing clients has been honed from years of experience in process engineering, project management and execution, and business development. Serving as an executive advisor to several CEOs, Yan has a knack for quickly assessing a situation and bringing valuable insights to the issues at hand. She thrives on working closely with her teams to deliver outstanding results for clients and stakeholders.
“I put a lot of focus on ensuring we have the right capabilities and teams to meet and exceed each client’s expectations. We have fantastic specialists in virtually every area. I get to bring them all together in ways that deliver significant value to our clients,” she added.
At the same time, Jin also wants to ensure she is creating a better world for her child, her community and future generations. An avid outdoor adventurer, she’s hiked Australia’s 80 km Cradle Mountain trail and BC’s 75 km West Coast Trail, among others, Jin feels a deep connection with the environment that she now shares with her daughter.
She sees her role at Ausenco as a unique opportunity to have a positive impact on sustainability globally. Ausenco’s multidisciplinary capabilities allow her to ensure that the firm’s clients are getting the best sustainability advice and input available. “We have an amazing breadth of sustainability services that we can tap into to meet a wide range of challenges and opportunities,” she notes. “And our historic focus on value-engineering means that we tend to deliver the smallest footprint with the smallest environmental impact from the start.”
Jin recognizes the huge impact that a number of women of inspiration have had on her career and development. Throughout her journey, Jin has worked with people who have encouraged her, helped her build her confidence and supported her as she strove for greater responsibilities and impact. She hopes to do the same for the next generation of young engineers; lighting the way and exploring together the incredible career opportunities the mining sector offers.
The daughter of two chemistry professors, Jin developed a passion for STEM studies at an early age. Now she hopes to help other young women find and explore their passion for STEM studies by, for example, hosting high school students at the Ausenco office and working with the Women@Ausenco Network to help young women professionals plan their careers.
Ultimately, Jin believes her success comes down to confidence and collaboration. The confidence came from being encouraged to reach for new and more ambitious roles throughout her career. “I was lucky to have mentors who continuously pushed me to reach further, to trust my capabilities and to learn more. That’s what gave me the confidence to push through any glass ceilings I encountered in my journey.”
Collaboration has become central to Jin’s approach to leadership. Whether she is working directly with clients, her leadership team or with women across the sector, Jin’s focus on collaboration continues to deliver significant outcomes for the industry, the environment and the community.
