Katherine Arenas-Collao is a Mining engineer Bsc. from Chile, currently pursuing her Master's degree in mining engineering at Queen's University in Canada. With a unique combination of expertise, she aspires to serve as a bridge in the industry, connecting the engineering and social aspects of mining. Throughout her career, her research has primarily focused on the social impacts of mining, including topics such as water stewardship, women's success in mining, Equity Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI), and Indigenous people's engagement. Her Master's degree thesis aims to identify the systemic, structural, and organizational barriers that women face in the mining industry, both at a general level and when they become parents. Through this study, she intends to develop a set of best practices and innovative measures that promote equal opportunities for women, enabling them to fully integrate, advance, and empower themselves within the industry.
