Rick Hutson was a great contributor and mentor to students looking to enter the mining industry and was a highly valued member of the mining community. He had immeasurable energy where students were concerned and he worked with many universities and student groups speaking, listening and sharing his enthusiasm for mining. Rick Hutson was very active with Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) and Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC), and was a board member of Women in Mining Canada. He passed away in 2014. Further to his passing, a decision was made to honor Rick Hutson’s memory and all of the work he did in helping young women in particular to enter the mining industry, and the Award was created.
Women in Mining Canada would like to recognize the mentors and coaches who have supported, encouraged, guided, and advised women along their journey in the Canadian mining industry, either in school or in their careers. Breaking into a new field is a daunting task at best, and the mining world presents numerous complexities. Our mentors have been here at different times and through different stages to coach us all the way and cross the finish line with success.
Nominees for the Rick Hutson Mentorship Award can be of any gender and must be nominated by women either studying and looking to join the Canadian mining industry upon graduation, or currently working in the Canadian mining industry. Nominators must be Canadian citizens or Canadian permanent residents. Nominees can have any relation (e.g. parent, sibling, employer, friend, professor, colleague, etc.) to the Nominator. Nominators and Nominees do not need to be a member of Women in Mining Canada or a member of a regional Women in Mining Chapter; however, they are encouraged to become a member through the Women in Mining Canada website (wimcanada.org) or regional Women in Mining Chapter websites. Current Women in Mining Canada board members are not eligible, nor are previous winners of the Rick Hutson Mentorship Award. Persons who are currently employed or contracted by Women in Mining Canada are not eligible for consideration for the Rick Hutson Mentorship Award, and may only be eligible after one year following their employment or contract period has ended. However, winners of other awards in the Trailblazer Awards Series are eligible, provided they meet all other criteria.
Nominators must highlight the Nominee’s role in mentoring or coaching the Nominator, in their choice to pursue a career in the Canadian mining industry and/or during their career in the Canadian mining industry. Furthermore, Nominators are invited to describe the Nominee’s personal character as a mentor or coach. For example, comments may include any of the following personal characteristics: leading by positive change, disruptor and innovator, visionary thinking and innovative approach to the industry, collegiality and team building, supportive, authenticity and transparency, integrity and ethics, business acumen, etc. Other details, such as the estimated duration of the mentorship relationship, are also encouraged.
Nomination Guidelines
Fill out the present form to submit a Nominee for consideration for the 2026 Women in Mining Canada Rick Hutson Mentorship Award.
Each nomination will include:
- Nominator and Nominee contact information
- Cover letter describing the Nominee’s role as a mentor as described above (max 2 pages)
- Minimum of one and up to three letters support
- These letters can either be collected from individuals familiar with the Nominee (e.g. current or former mentees, colleagues, etc.) or collected from individuals familiar with the Nominator’s experience with the Nominee.
Additional Information
Selection of the Women in Mining Canada Rick Hutson Mentorship Award recipient will be made by the Rick Hutson Mentorship Award Selection Committee and will subsequently be approved by the Women in Mining Canada Board of Directors, whose decision will be final. Selection will be based solely on the documentation submitted.
All results will be made public at the end of the month of February 2026, and candidates will be informed accordingly. Recipients and the Awards will be celebrated at the 2026 Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) annual convention.

Rick Hutson a été un contributeur et un mentor précieux pour les étudiants souhaitant intégrer l’industrie minière, et il était un membre très apprécié de la communauté minière. Il déployait une énergie incommensurable auprès des étudiants et a collaboré avec de nombreuses universités et groupes étudiants, partageant son enthousiasme pour l’industrie minière. Rick Hutson était très actif au sein de l’Institut canadien des mines, de la métallurgie et du pétrole (ICM) et du Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada, et siégeait au conseil d’administration de Women in Mining Canada. Il est décédé en 2014. Suite à son décès, la décision a été prise de rendre hommage à sa mémoire et à tout le travail qu’il a accompli pour aider les jeunes femmes, en particulier, à intégrer l’industrie minière, et le Prix a été créé.
Women in Mining Canada souhaite rendre hommage aux mentors et aux coaches qui ont soutenu, encouragé, guidé et conseillé les femmes tout au long de leur parcours dans l’industrie minière canadienne, que ce soit à l’école ou dans leur carrière. Percer dans un nouveau domaine est une tâche ardue, et le monde minier présente de nombreuses complexités. Nos mentors sont venus à différents moments et à différentes étapes pour nous accompagner tout au long du parcours et franchir la ligne d’arrivée avec succès.
Les candidats au Prix de Mentorat Rick Hutson peuvent être de tout genre et doivent être proposées par des femmes qui étudient et souhaitent se joindre à l’industrie minière canadienne après l’obtention de leur diplôme, ou qui y travaillent actuellement. Les candidats doivent être citoyens canadiennes ou résidents permanents du Canada. Les candidats peuvent avoir n’importe quel lien de (p. ex., parent, frère ou sœur, employeur, ami, professeur, collègue, etc.) avec la proposante. Les candidats et les proposantes n’ont pas besoin d’être membres de Women in Mining Canada ou d’un chapitre régionale de Women in Mining; toutefois, elles sont encouragées à devenir membres par l’intermédiaire du site web de Women in Mining Canada (wimcanada.org) ou des sites web des chapitres régionaux de Women in Mining. Les membres actuels du conseil d’administration de Women in Mining Canada ne sont pas admissibles,ni les anciens lauréats du Prix de Mentorat Rick Hutson. Les proposantes doivent souligner le rôle de mentor ou d’encadrement du candidat dans son choix de poursuivre une carrière dans l’industrie minière canadienne et/ou pendant sa carrière dans l’industrie minière canadienne. De plus, les proposantes sont invitées à décrire la personnalité du candidat en tant que mentor ou coach. Par exemple, les commentaires peuvent inclure les caractéristiques personnelles suivantes : leadership axé sur le changement positif, esprit perturbateur et innovateur, visionnaire et approche novatrice du secteur, esprit de collégialité et esprit d’équipe, soutien, authenticité et transparence, intégrité et éthique, sens des affaires, etc. D’autres détails, comme la durée estimée de la relation de mentorat, sont également encouragés.
Consignes de candidature
Remplissez le présent formulaire pour soumettre une candidature au Prix de Mentorat Rick Hutson 2026 de Women in Mining Canada.
Chaque candidature comprendra :
- Coordonnées de la proposante et du candidat
- Lettre de motivation décrivant le rôle de mentor du candidat, tel que décrit ci-dessus (maximum 2 pages)
- Minimum d’une et jusqu’à trois lettres de soutien
- Ces lettres peuvent être recueillies auprès de personnes connaissant bien le candidat (p. ex., mentorés actuels ou anciens, collègues, etc.) ou auprès de personnes connaissant bien l’expérience de la proposante avec le candidat.
Renseignements supplémentaires
La sélection du lauréat du Prix de Mentorat Rick Hutson de Women in Mining Canada sera effectuée par le comité de sélection du Prix de Mentorat Rick Hutson, puis approuvée par le conseil d’administration de Women in Mining Canada, dont la décision sera définitive. La sélection se fera uniquement sur la base des documents soumis.
Tous les résultats seront rendus publics à la fin du mois de février 2026 et les candidats seront informés en conséquence. Les lauréats et les prix seront célébrés lors du congrès annuel 2026 du Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC).
